Scrumptious evenings at the Wildhart.

As a couple in London we used to eat out all the time, always sampling the local E3 delights. But since moving to the beautiful Hertfordshire, yes, we bought a house, so naturally had minimal savings left, and we have been working so hard to get our house the way we wanted we haven't really sampled the local delights... that was until now!

On a mammoth countryside walk with our little dog Bertie, in the distance we came across this beautiful looking Mill. So holding that memory in our minds we endeavoured to find out, what this unusual looking landing ground is. We tracked the restaurant down online. It seemed they had newly opened upstairs and offered a Valentines menu, something we do not normally go for but we said what the hell and booked it in advance.

Upon arrival, it was a little dark in the car park which we later found out from the owner, was currently being fixed, but this also added some kind of magical charm to the fact it was a dark rainy night and we were in the middle of nowhere, by a canal, Hitchcock and a camera could pop out any moment to film the horror ahead but we headed for the door and entered. We were greeted with a lovely warm smile, warm atmosphere and just the place you would love to pull up a chair and cosy in for the night away from the cold dank air. Large glass of Merlot (is there any other size) and a pint of the local ale were on the cards as we glanced at the menu to order before being shown to our table. Something I really like actually, the fact you can sit in a comfortable surrounding with your wine before rushing to the table and ordering from there.

Arriving at our table when our food was just ready was perfect and what a lovely quirkily decorated room, I loved the animal prints on the wall the rustic but on trend decor, William Morris meets cosy modern chic. Vintage music dimly playing around us with a calm candlelit atmosphere, it felt very romantic indeed. Absolutely fell in love with the Stag with Style holding our reservation card, so much so, I have ordered these for our wedding table name holders!!

We ordered the sharing platter to start which consisted of, mini Baked Tunworth English Camembert, homemade Free Range Wild Boar Scotch Egg, Homemade Beetroot Ketchup, Wild Fennel & Truffle Salami, Venison Carpaccio, Wild Mushroom & Truffle Salami, Onion Rings, Game Chips. All of which were absolutely delicious, not greasy or over flavoured just damn tasty. The camembert was sheer cheese heaven.

Next up, but not rushed, we moved onto the main course, I had the venison a meat I do not often eat, with red cabbage and a mini Shepard's pie, portion size was a delight, the venison was the most succulent, fat free, juicy meat I have ever tasted and the cabbage went down a treat. Guy had Rabbit, considering he was born in the Chinese year of the Rabbit this was a brave choice I feel. He discovered a new found love for pearl barley and ..... loved the rabbit!!! He said how tender it was and everything was cooked perfectly.

Now if we were not full enough, the piece du resistance.... BAILEYS CHEESECAKE for me, homemade with a delightful surprise shot on the side and Guy had a chocolate Cointreau moose, also with a shot on the side, not being an orange lover myself (I believe orange should be eaten alone and not mixed with anything, including duck, it just doesn't work for me)  I was sticking with my delicious cheesecake, being a huge fan of the drink, the cheesecake probably could have pushed it further and had a little more of the lovely liquor in but this is coming from a woman that puts nearly a bottle of brandy in her christmas cake! The creamy consistency and crumbly base, consistent with that of a homemade cheesecake was delectable and certainly something I will be attempting to recreate.

Sad to leave and longing not to go home so soon, we could have spent the whole evening and beyond in the WildHart restaurant. It was delightful. Helpful, knowledgeable staff, lovely wine, delicious food and an irresistible atmosphere what more could you want, we cannot wait to go back.

As a side note you can also host your wedding at this enchanting venue, for an intimate, personal day in gorgeous surroundings, it would be just perfect.
