What extortionately overpriced side would you like with that madam?

London, city of innovation, city of lights, a super power in todays modern exuberant world and apparently the home to the overpriced whimsical side dish.

Would you like fries with that?? A historically famous question asked in speedy food joints around the globe. Brought to us by the ever wonderous Americans. McDonalds, Wendy's, KFC, to name a sample collective of these servers and yes if not ordering a meal, fries would be a great added extra.

However, when in a Highly delightful venue, decorated like the inside of a 1920's railway station, styled out with the latest in overpriced vintage fittings. To be asked the question, do you want fries with that? should surely not even enter this simple equation when ordering a meal. Yes, MEAL, from the, on some occasions, overpriced menu.

At which point I glance to the sides section of the menu, where, for a overwhelmingly reasonable £8 (the price of a meal in itself on some occasions) I can have mash potato and a child size portion of carrots to go alongside my £35 piece of chicken to indeed make this into a fully competent meal.

It angers me as more and more satiable food restaurants I know and love are turning to this method of supplying a dish to simply add a pound sign onto the ever growing bill. You wouldn't be asked if you would like some lemon with your gin and tonic for an extra charge or some filling perhaps for your sandwich, even some buttons to go with that new shirt you just purchased for an extortionate amount. It is simple, and in the value of all English living traditions, like a marriage which no man should ever put a sunder, fish comes with chips, burgers love to bond with fries as does mash love to snuggle with sausages.

So to these frightfully intimidating questions asked at the dinner table the response simple,  keep your sides and I will raise you the classic way of ordering a delightfully fulfilling evening meal. The old fashioned way.
